'I drank a lot and did not know what I was doing,' pop star Tsuyoshi Kusanagi said Friday at a news conference. Kusanagi, a member of the group SMAP, was arrested Thursday after complaints that a drunken man was making a fuss in a park, a Tokyo Metropolitan Police official said.
The singer apologized at a news conference after he was released from the Harajuku police station. "I drank a lot and did not know what I was doing. As an adult, I did something shameful," Kusanagi said, bowing deeply.
His arrest was the top news item in Japan, with TV networks repeatedly broadcasting footage showing Kusanagi being escorted to a police van.
Kusanagi, sitting on the grass, resisted the arrest, saying, "What's wrong with being naked?" public broadcaster NHK reported earlier. His clothes were bundled near him.
Police questioned Kusanagi and later searched his apartment. Nippon TV said nothing was seized.
